How to achieve old fashioned hair/makeup styles of the 50s and 60s?

I really want to grow out my hair. Not only that, I want to learn to do finger waves and pin curls and regular curls. How should I get my hair cut for that? Should I get layers? What kind? Bangs?

(My hair is currently shoulder length with layers.)

Also, do you recommend any good red (blue-based) lip stains? I'm not a fan of lipstick.

I'd love to have the same look as Kate Beckinsale did in Pearl Harbor, hair and all;

I don't think they had layered hair back in the 50's??? To get that volume in your hair you probably wouldn't want a lot of layers anyways.

You'd probably have to use curlers. Try blow-drying your hair on low heat as you take the curlers out, and then brush your hair so that it's not as curly.

Good luck~
